HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (NBC NEWS)- At least 200 people were injured Monday as severe storms swept through central and southeastern Virginia. The governor declared a state of emergency for areas of southeastern Virginia damaged by tornadoes. A vicious string of storms spawned at least three tornados as they swept across Virginia late Monday. It was all part of the same storm system that brought rain to the Augusta area Monday. A community that is now splintered and spread for miles. Cars were tossed and flipped, powerlines were snapped and twisted, and homes have completely disappeared. Witness Reginald King says "it wiped a whole house completly off the surface, all you could see is the driveway." Virginia's governor has declared a state of emergency as hundreds begin the difficult task of cleaning-up what the violent storms left behind. Rich Rogers contributed to this story. |
