Storms Leave Hail Path Across CSRA Saturday Morning

By Rich Rogers rrogers@nbcaugusta.com

Two supercell thunderstorms developed early Saturday morning in north Georgia, and made a beeline to the Augusta area by 6 a.m.

The storms produced gusty winds and hail, along with thunder and lightning. The first report of severe weather occurred in Lincolnton at around 5:30 a.m. when nickel-sized hail was spotted.

More penny to nickel sized hail was reported along the Edgefield-Aiken county line shortly after 6 a.m. NBC Augusta Storm Spotter Rick Lazenby reported 3/4" hail in Belvedere.

Golf ball sized hail was seen in the Beaver Creek area of Richmond County.

One inch diameter hail was reported in Aiken. Williston also saw hail and wind gusts estimated to reach 55mph.

The storms causing the damage weakened and moved out of our area before 9 a.m.

There is a chance of isolated severe thunderstorms Saturday afternoon, and a stronger possibility of severe weather for Mother's Day Sunday.

Thank you Jeff so much for keeping everyone informed about the weather on Sunday morning. With weather call now I feel a lot safer knowing you will call me when bad weather occurs. You are the only person I watch for the weather forecast.

I woke up on my own shortly before 6am, it was overcast, but I didn't have a clue there was bad weather in the CSRA. Why not? I have a NOAA radio on right behind my pillow, not a peep out of it.

After weather call at 5:55 am, I had 4 minutes to make coffee & unplug the computer before the storm hit with round, flat, dime-sized hail and gusty winds. At 6:38, as I drank my coffee, the 2nd storm hit with nickel and quarter size hail. Thanks, Jeff, for being on-air before 6:00 am on Sat. morning. With you and weather call, I feel much easier when severe weather comes.
