After storms destroyed or damaged their homes, businesses and even churches, Jenkins County residents asked Governor Sonny Perdue to declare the county a state of emergency, and he did Monday.

Assessment teams spent the day surveying the damage while residents and volunteers started what will be a long clean up process. With widespread damage throughout the county, victims of Sunday's storms are counting on state and federal aid to help them get back on their feet.

Clean-up continues in Jenkins County Monday after storms swept through the area leaving a long path of destruction. Crews spent the day removing trees and clearing debris from Sunday's severe weather.

Homeowner Clifford Duggan lost two of his homes and even with insurance, he says he's not sure he'll recoup his loss.

“I don't know what's going to happen with the insurance side of it because it was in the middle of being sold so I am going to wait to see what happens,” he said.

As many as 75 homes and businesses were destroyed or damaged.

Jenkins County EMA Director Bob Fields says they are also relying on the help from the community to get by.

“Church groups and local citizens have showed an outpouring of help. We've got some coming in to help families get on their feet,” he said.

While no one was seriously hurt, a man was taken to the hospital for bruised ribs after being hit by flying debris.

Perdue also declared a state of emergency in neighboring Emanuel and Jefferson counties.
