The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the summer of 2008 was the ninth warmest summer on record globally.
Since records began in 1880, the June through August period averaged nearly one degree Fahrenheit above the 20th century average.
The month of August tied with 1995 as the 10th warmest August on record.
One place that experienced much cooler than normal temperatures was Eyre in western Australia. An all-time low of 19 degrees was recorded there.
