High winds cause power outages and trees to fall in Georgia-Carolina

Georgia Power and SCE&G crews said thousands of homeowners and businesses were without power in Georgia-Carolina after high winds swept through the area Friday afternoon.

Fallen trees also damaged several homes and street lights throughout the area.

NBC Augusta 26 News was there as workers started removing a large tree from the roof of a home on Dan Street in west Augusta.

Nobody was inside when it fell. The owner estimates $30,000 in damage. He actually works for a tree removal company and says he wishes he would've listened to his own advice.

"With these storms and such, don't leave your trees unattended, and if it looks like its dying or dead, get someone out to give you an estimate of what it would take to get it fixed," said Russ Marshall.

A wind gust of 53 mph was recorded at Augusta Regional Airport.

Richmond County school officials also tell us several buses were delayed because of the windy weather.

The widespread winds are believed to have been caused by heavy rains pulling down high atmospheric winds toward the ground, on the back side of a low pressure system. There was no lightning in the area on Friday, meaning thunderstorms were not the cause of the high winds. That is why no severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings were issued by the National Weather Service.
