Winter storm produces record snow and is heading east

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - After setting records in the West, a storm
system is icing up the Midwest.

The storm buried Spokane, Wash. under 19.4 inches of snow -- the
most in a 24-hour period since record keeping began in 1881. Another four inches have fallen since the record was set and road crews are working around the clock to dig the city out.

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, has a record 25 inches of snow to contend with. The past record was 16 inches set in 1955.

The system is moving on, unleashing heavy snow in Michigan. Some
14 inches are expected in parts of Illinois. It's forecast to start hitting the Northeast by mid-morning.

Hundreds of schools and school districts from Michigan to New Jersey, New York and New England have called off classes.
