AUGUSTA, Ga. - Does it seem like almost every year the trick-or-treaters are sweating instead of shivering? If you thought so, you're onto a Halloween warming trend the Augusta area has seen in recent years.
Climate records obtained by NBC Augusta 26 News show the average high temperature for Oct. 31 in Augusta, based on the 30-year average at Bush Field, is 72 degrees.
This year, the high temperature on Oct. 31 reached a whopping 84 degrees.
In the last 10 years (2000-2009), the average high temperature for Halloween has been 77.6 degrees, nearly 6 degrees above the 30-year (1971-2000) average.
While high temperatures have been increasing, low temperatures for Halloween have been very close to average. The average low based on the 30-year mean is 45. Lows the past 10 Halloween's have averaged at 44.3. Low temperatures have varied widely during the past 10 years, with the coldest occurring in 2008 at 30 degrees, and the warmest in 2009 at 65 degrees.
We have to go back in the record books all the way to 1993 before we find a Halloween with a high in the 50s. That year, the high reached just 50 degrees.
Rain seems to be quite rare on Halloween in Augusta. This year was the first time we've had rain since 1997.
